An’ggrath

An’ggrath, known as the Unbound, is an Exalted Bloodthirster, a uniquely powerful Greater Daemon of the Chaos god Khorne in Warhammer 40,000. As an Exalted Bloodthirster he stands apart from the common host of axe-bearing, brass-skinned daemons that serve the Blood God, ranking among the small number of named, individually distinguished Greater Daemons given form in the warp by Khorne’s fury. His epithet points to the defining feature of his recorded history: a long period of confinement, and an eventual breaking of the bonds that held him.

Accounts of An’ggrath’s past describe him as a daemon who, for a great span of years, was restrained rather than loosed at will: bound by ritual chains and kept as a weapon to be summoned and unleashed only under controlled conditions before being drawn back into confinement. That containment did not hold indefinitely. An’ggrath’s escape from his bindings marks the point at which he passed from a controlled instrument of slaughter into an independent power in his own right, thereafter fighting among the Daemon Legions of Khorne wherever the Blood God’s followers call his kind into battle.

An’ggrath is counted, alongside other named Exalted Bloodthirsters such as Skarbrand, among the small company of Khorne’s Greater Daemons distinguished enough to hold individual identities rather than remaining anonymous instances of their type; his appearance on a battlefield marks a summoning of unusual scale by Khorne’s mortal or daemonic worshippers. Like other daemons of his rank, An’ggrath has no fixed homeworld, his true dwelling being the warp and, within it, Khorne’s own domain, from which he and his fellow Bloodthirsters are called forth into the material battles of the 41st millennium.
