Ephrael Stern

Ephrael Stern is a Seraphim of the Adepta Sororitas whose resistance to warp corruption earned her the title Daemonifuge. As a young Battle Sister she was the sole recorded survivor of a massacre at an Ecclesiarchy convent, an atrocity later traced to a compact between a renegade Inquisitor and forces of the warp. Where the massacre should have left only a martyr, Stern emerged instead with an anomalous capacity to resist, and in some accounts actively repel, daemonic influence, an ability Imperial scholars have never satisfactorily classified as gift, mutation, or something rarer still.

Her survival made her a person of interest to several Imperial institutions at once, and their disagreement over what she represented shaped the rest of her career. The Inquisitor Ramius, implicated in the original massacre, pursued her as a loose end whose testimony or destruction he required; elements of the Ordo Hereticus pursued her as a suspected daemonhost or unwitting vector for corruption; and factions within her own Ecclesiarchy were divided between veneration and condemnation. Through the flight and combat that followed, an Arco-flagellant known as Kage attached himself to her cause, one of the few constants in a life otherwise defined by institutions that could not decide whether to shelter her or burn her.

The label Daemonifuge, killer or banisher of daemons, attached itself to Stern through report and rumour rather than through any formal commission, and she has never held it as an office within the Ecclesiarchy’s hierarchy. Later Imperial-era accounts place her again at the centre of events in the years following the opening of the Great Rift, when the Adepta Sororitas’ wider resurgence under commanders such as Lord Militant Morvenn Vahl renewed scrutiny of Stern’s status: to some witnesses a living sign of the Emperor’s favour in an age starved of them, to others still an unresolved heresy risk the Ordos have simply not yet closed the file on. Accounts of her present activities and standing within the Sororitas hierarchy differ, and no consensus verdict on her nature has been recorded.
