Blood Ravens

The Blood Ravens are a Space Marine Chapter of unknown Founding, loyal to the Imperium and noted for its pursuit of knowledge and many Librarians. Their genetic lineage and progenitor Legion are unrecorded: the Chapter’s own chronicles begin only in the early thirty-seventh millennium, and what earlier records once existed — including those said to be held by the Inquisition’s Ordo Malleus — are sealed or lost. Lacking any confirmed primarch, the Chapter directs its spiritual reverence toward the Emperor alone, and honours instead a single founding figure, the Chief Librarian Azariah Vidya, remembered as its ‘Great Father’. In the Chapter’s present era its Chapter Master is Gabriel Angelos.

No permanent homeworld is now firmly attached to the Blood Ravens. Imperial and Chapter records associate them with the world of Aurelia, which served as their base until it was taken by a warp storm, an event the Chapter recalls as a defining catastrophe. Since that loss the Blood Ravens have operated as a fleet-based Chapter, their command maintained aboard a flagship battle barge, and they retain a tradition — traced to Vidya — of appointing senior Librarians to combined command roles alongside their military duties. The Chapter also maintains an extensive collection of relics and wargear, gathered across centuries of campaigning and archived for study as much as for war.

The Chapter’s documented history opens amid a costly campaign against Chaos forces in the Gothic Sector, in which the Chapter Master and much of the 1st Company were lost to what was later found to be a stratagem of the Alpha Legion; it was in the aftermath that Vidya assumed command. In later centuries the Blood Ravens fought on many fronts against Orks, whom they count among their oldest enemies, and against the forces of Chaos. Their 3rd Company, under Gabriel Angelos, campaigned on Tartarus against Alpha Legion and xenos forces alike, while a mixed force under Captain Davian Thule, with officers including Cyrus, confronted a Necron threat on Kronus amid interference from the Word Bearers. The Chapter also fought the First Aurelian Crusade at Meridian, one of several such crusades bound up with the fate of Aurelia. A later campaign on Kaurava, led by Captain Indrick Boreale, proved catastrophic, costing the Chapter five companies and forcing a long period of rebuilding.

The Blood Ravens’ subsequent history has been marked by further strain, including internal betrayal under Chapter Master Azariah Kyras and, in the forty-first millennium, the brief return of Aurelia to realspace — engineered by the Black Legion and repelled only through the efforts of the Chapter’s Third and Fifth Companies. By the Age of the Dark Imperium the Chapter, its ranks thinned by the Aurelian Crusades and the Kaurava campaign, had begun a deliberate programme of rebuilding under Angelos, and was among the Chapters granted the means to induct Primaris Space Marines, a measure intended to restore its depleted strength.
