Irillyth

Irillyth, known as the Shade of Twilight, is the Phoenix Lord of the Shadow Spectres, an Asuryani Aspect devoted to killing at extreme range. Like Jain Zar, Karandras, Fuegan, Baharroth and Maugan Ra, he is counted among the Phoenix Lords first tutored in the blade by Asurmen, founder of the Path of the Warrior, though Irillyth alone answered a private vision by shaping an Aspect built around the jet pack and the prism rifle rather than close combat. A Shadow Spectres warrior strikes from a hidden vantage, fires a beam that intensifies with range, and withdraws before an enemy can close the distance — a discipline that marks the shrine as the most reclusive of the Aspect warrior traditions.

Irillyth’s origins lie with the craftworld Mymeara. There, foresight showed him a rising reptilian empire that would one day consume his people, and he departed Mymeara to search for a means of forestalling it, founding the Shadow Spectres shrine in the course of his wandering. He died far from his craftworld, on a world the Imperium would later chart and name Betalis III, and his armour and prism rifle passed out of Asuryani hands. Mymeara itself withdrew into concealment within a nebula, continuing to watch for the danger Irillyth had foreseen while its Shadow Spectres searched for their lost Phoenix Lord’s wargear.

That search ended in 894.M41, when Mymeara’s warriors traced Irillyth’s armour to a world neighbouring Lileathanir. The Imperium had by then taken an interest in the site, and Mymeara fought a sharp engagement to recover the relic before Imperial forces could remove or study it, an episode that places Irillyth’s legacy directly within Lileathanir’s wartime record and marks one of the few attested instances of a craftworld risking open battle with the Imperium over a Phoenix Lord’s remains.

The armour’s recovery did not return Irillyth himself. Tradition holds that a Phoenix Lord’s spirit endures within his wargear, ready to guide whichever Exarch proves worthy to wear it, but in Irillyth’s case that presence has not answered since his death; the Shadow Spectres shrine is accordingly reactivated only when such an Exarch steps forward, and passes into dormancy between them. The prism rifle recovered near Lileathanir remains in working order, and its condition is taken by Mymeara’s Seers as evidence that Irillyth’s spirit may yet return, though no confirmed account of his reappearance exists.
