KuGath

KuGath, styled the Plaguefather, is a Great Unclean One, a greater daemon of Nurgle who is associated with the brewing of new plagues. As a Great Unclean One he belongs to the senior rank of Nurgle’s daemonic host, and he is presented as a master of pestilence who devises virulent afflictions within the Chaos God’s realm in the Warp. His standing among the Great Unclean Ones is recorded as one of particular seniority, though the origins of his individual existence are not attested in detail.

Accounts of KuGath are concerned chiefly with his function rather than with a dated career: he is described as tending and refining the diseases that Nurgle values, and as a figure whose plagues may be released beyond the Warp when Nurgle’s servants war upon the material universe. He is served by lesser Nurgle daemons, including Plaguebearers, Nurglings and Beasts of Nurgle, and he is understood to act in the interest of Nurgle rather than as an independent power. Named alliances, rivalries and campaigns are sparsely recorded, and later tradition attributes to him few specific engagements; this entry therefore does not assign him battles or outcomes that are not established.

Within the wider setting, KuGath illustrates how Nurgle’s domain is portrayed as a place of ordered cultivation and invention as well as decay, and he stands beside the Death Guard and other Nurgle-sworn hosts as a daemonic counterpart to the plagues they spread in the Imperium. His status in the current era is that of a living daemon of the Warp, as such beings are neither born nor slain in the mortal sense, and his activity is best placed in the age of the Great Rift, when Chaos incursions widened. He is contemporary with other Great Unclean Ones and with the Plague Wars of the Death Guard, which offer the nearest attested historical context for the spread of Nurgle’s influence.
