Obsidian Knight

Obsidian Knight is a Freeblade, an Imperial Knight pilot who fights without allegiance to any noble house.

Freeblades emerge when a Knight house is destroyed, when a scion is orphaned before completing the rites of Becoming, or when a pilot renounces their oaths of fealty and takes to war alone. Obsidian Knight is recorded within this tradition, its war plate stripped of house heraldry and marked instead by a blackened, soot-dark livery from which the epithet derives. Lacking the support of a Sacristan chapter or a household’s armouries, such a knight relies on itinerant Mechanicus artisans, mercenary contracts, and the goodwill of Imperial commanders who value a Knight’s firepower on campaigns too minor, or too desperate, to draw a full household’s attention.

No dated campaign or named engagement is attested for Obsidian Knight in the surviving record, a gap common to Freeblades whose service is rarely chronicled by the noble houses that might once have claimed them. It stands nonetheless within a recognised tradition of errant Knights encountered across the Imperium and, during the Horus Heresy, among the war engines separated from their households by the collapse of loyalties across the Great Crusade’s fracturing armies. Its significance lies less in any single attested deed than in what it represents: a war machine and pilot bound by oath to the Emperor’s service alone, fighting wherever it is needed rather than under any single house’s banner.
