Saint Sabbat

Saint Sabbat is the Imperial Cult saint after whom the Sabbat Worlds are named, venerated as patron of the crusade fought to reclaim them from Chaos. Ecclesiarchy tradition places her many thousands of years before the present age, as the leader of an earlier campaign of reconquest across the region of space that now bears her name. She is recorded as having died a martyr and been canonised, and the Adeptus Ministorum counts her among its warrior-saints.

The worlds she is said to have liberated later fell back under the dominion of the Archenemy. That loss shaped the forty-first-millennium Sabbat Worlds Crusade, launched under Warmaster Slaydo and continued after his death under Warmaster Macaroth. The Imperium presented the crusade as the completion of her work, and her name and image served as a unifying symbol for the many regiments committed to it. Her relics, shrines and iconography travel with the crusade forces, and the Ecclesiarchy’s clergy attached to the campaign use her cult to sustain morale and to lend the war religious legitimacy.

Her cult is closely tied to the regiments that fought the crusade. These include the Tanith First and Only, the Imperial Guard regiment led by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, and the crusade’s Ecclesiarchal and military command, within which veneration of the Saint forms part of the spiritual and political framework. Later tradition holds that certain individuals manifested as living avatars or reincarnations of Saint Sabbat during the crusade era.
