Sheed Ranko is a legionary of the Alpha Legion, a covert operative deployed during the early Horus Heresy on the world of Nurth, later called Tartarus.

Ranko served within the Alpha Legion’s tradition of small, autonomous strike cadres rather than the massed formations typical of other Legions, reflecting his gene-sire Alpharius Omegon’s doctrine of infiltration, misdirection, and cellular command. He is recorded as part of the covert mission to Nurth alongside fellow legionaries and allied specialists sent to investigate the world’s inhabitants, the Cabal, whose prophetic counsel had already shaped the Alpha Legion’s understanding of the war to come between Horus and the Emperor. On Nurth, Ranko operated amid a tangle of rival agendas, with elements of the Alpha Legion, the Word Bearers, and independent agents of the Emperor converging on the same objective, each pursuing a different reading of the Cabal’s warnings. His conduct during this mission is consistent with the Legion’s wider practice of concealing true loyalties even from erstwhile allies, a trait that later defined the Alpha Legion’s approach to the Heresy at large.

Ranko’s significance lies chiefly in his association with the Nurth mission, a pivotal but deliberately obscured episode that shaped how the Alpha Legion approached the opening moves of the Horus Heresy. His contemporaries on that operation include the Alpha Legion officer Ingo Pech and the perpetual agent John Grammaticus, both bound to the same contested intelligence about the Cabal’s prophecy. Accounts differ on Ranko’s subsequent fate once the Legion’s loyalties openly split following Horus’s declaration at Isstvan, and no confirmed record places him definitively within either the traitor or loyalist remnants of the Alpha Legion in the Heresy’s later campaigns.
