The Masque of Slaanesh
Herald of Slaanesh, The Eternal Dancer
Also known as The Masque
The Masque of Slaanesh is a unique herald daemon of the Chaos god Slaanesh, cursed to dance without cease after a performance displeased her master. Before her fall she was accounted the finest of Slaanesh’s handmaidens, the dancer chosen to perform for the Dark Prince above all rivals among the Brides of Slaanesh. Accounts differ on the exact nature of the performance that failed to please, but the judgement itself is not disputed: Slaanesh, for whom imperfect entertainment is among the gravest offences a servant can commit, cast her out and bound her to dance forever, in mockery of the grace that once elevated her.
The curse is structured as an invitation rather than an open torment, which is characteristic of Slaanesh’s punishments — pleasures turned to sentences, gifts that cannot be refused. Where the Masque appears, mortals and daemons alike are drawn to watch her, and those who watch too long are compelled to join the dance themselves. Once taken up, the steps cannot be abandoned; combatants have broken formation, daemon engines have stumbled, and entire flanks have unravelled as troops surrendered discipline to her rhythm. She herself is granted no exemption from the sentence: she cannot stop moving, and no victory, ritual, or intervention by another power is recorded as having freed her from it.
Among Slaanesh’s other daemons the Masque occupies an unusual place. Ordinary Heralds of Slaanesh lead hosts of Daemonettes, ride alongside Fiends of Slaanesh, or serve a Keeper of Secrets as lieutenants in war; the Masque leads nothing and commands no host, since her curse makes her a hazard to ally and enemy alike rather than a conventional battlefield captain. Her manifestations are correspondingly rare and unpredictable, drawn to points in the mortal and immortal realms where excess, vanity, or despair already run high — a besieged court given to decadence, a warband celebrating a massacre, a ritual staged to flatter a rival power. She is recorded across both the age of the Great Crusade and the present era of the Imperium, consistent with Slaanesh’s daemons drawing no firm distinction between epochs, and her sentence, so far as any account attests, remains unbroken.
