Assault on the Hellspire

The Assault on the Hellspire was an Imperial victory fought on the hive world Orana at an unspecified point in the 41st millennium. Accounts disagree on the Imperial Guard strength committed: the narrative account recorded three dozen regiments, while a summary table recorded seventy-two. Twenty Space Marine companies from seven Chapters also took part, foremost among them the Blood Angels under Commander Dante. After planetfall, contact between the ground force and the supporting fleet was cut. The capital hive had by then become the Hellspire, its surface flowing shut like wax when damaged. Librarian Dreadnought Galen sensed a Daemon Lord being summoned within a cathedral at the structure’s peak, behind a void barrier powered by a reactor inside the spire. Three Stormravens carried a strike force in through a rent in the Hellspire’s surface, and Galen destroyed the reactor. Dante and the Sanguinary Guard then attacked the ritual, but the Daemon Lord was already emerging; Dante buried the Axe Mortalis in its chest, and it was cast back into the warp. The Chaos hordes on the surface broke apart, contact with the fleet was restored, survivors were extracted, and the Hellspire was destroyed by orbital bombardment.
