Battle of Gryth

The Battle of Gryth was a Great Crusade–era engagement on the volcanic world of Gryth in which Bjorn of the Space Wolves and his pack faced the daemon Arvax the Arch-slaughterer. Against that foe the pack knew only death: every warrior who stood with Bjorn that day fell, and his own survival is remembered as a measure of skill rather than of fortune. Though the arrival of Leman Russ turned the wider fight, it was Bjorn who finally drove the daemon general from the field. In the hours that followed he refused the praise of those who had watched the duel, mourned his kinsmen on the victory pyres, and swore vengeance upon Arvax. Five years later he met the Arch-slaughterer again in a second battle whose location is not recorded, tore out the daemon’s throat with his wolf claw, and earned the name Fell-Handed together with a place in Russ’s Wolf Guard. The first meeting on Gryth remains the placeable beginning of that feud.
