Black Crusade of Furion
The Black Crusade of Furion was a Chaos invasion led by Furion, a Chaos Lord of Khorne who commanded the Skull-scythes warband. No year is recorded beyond M41. Before it was halted the crusade had laid waste to seventeen star systems, which are not named. It ended on Durga Principe, an Imperial world described in one account as a cardinal world. Imperial forces from several Space Marine Chapters, among them the Angels of Absolution, confronted the horde, and the Dark Angels sent their 3rd Company in support of that successor Chapter. Master Nadael placed the company in Furion’s path in the ruins of the Temple Saturnis, meaning to hold the attack while other Imperial forces surrounded the Chaos army. Furion force-marched his berzerkers through the freezing Durga night and struck before the defences were ready. Nadael was killed on the outer perimeter. Belial, the most senior surviving sergeant, took command. His squad formed a rearguard in the ruins while the company withdrew, and ambushed several squads of Khorne Berzerkers without loss. At the edge of the ruins Furion led the next attack in person. Belial killed him in single combat, cutting through his leg and firing two bolt rounds into him as he fell. Leaderless, the crusade splintered and was destroyed over the following months. One account says the victory earned Belial the office of Master of the Deathwing. A fuller account says he returned to the Rock as Master of the 3rd Company, where Azrael presented him with the Sword of Silence, and that he became Grand Master of the Deathwing only after Gabriel’s death.
