Death of Warmaster Slaydo
Warmaster Slaydo, commander of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, died at Balhaut shortly after his forces’ victory there, precipitating a contested succession. As the architect of the crusade’s opening campaigns, Slaydo had presided over the liberation of numerous worlds from the grip of Chaos, and his authority over the Crusade’s many regiments, lords militant and tacticians had gone largely unchallenged. His sudden death, coming at the height of the crusade’s momentum following the fall of Balhaut, left the future direction of the campaign uncertain. On his deathbed, Slaydo named Lord General Militant Macaroth as his successor and heir to the title of Warmaster, elevating him above several other senior commanders who had also held ambitions for the post. The choice was not universally welcomed among the crusade’s high command, and it introduced rivalries and resentments that would colour relations between Macaroth and certain officers and regiments in the years that followed. The transfer of the warmastership marked a turning point for the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, as strategic priorities and command relationships established under Slaydo were reassessed under his successor. Regiments raised or favoured during Slaydo’s tenure, including formations drawn from newly conquered or refugee populations, found their standing within the crusade altered as Macaroth asserted his own approach to the continuing campaign against Chaos forces across the Sabbat Worlds.
