Discovery of Mortarion
The Discovery of Mortarion took place on Barbarus during the Great Crusade; no year is recorded. The Emperor was already present among the village elders when Mortarion returned from campaign. The Emperor challenged Mortarion to take Necare’s last keep alone, or else serve him. Mortarion climbed past any height he had previously reached, but his respirator failed; Necare came to kill him, and the Emperor killed Necare. Mortarion knelt before the Emperor and was given command of the XIV Legion, then known as the Dusk Raiders, which he renamed the Death Guard.
