Double Eagle air war
The Double Eagle air war was a large-scale aerial conflict fought over Phantine, in the Enothis system, during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. It pitted Imperial flyers, drawn chiefly from the Phantine Skyborne air cadres and supporting Aeronautica Imperialis wings, against Archenemy incursions seeking to break Imperial control of the world’s contested airspace. The campaign unfolded largely above Phantine’s dense industrial hive-cities and toxic lower atmosphere, conditions that shaped much of the fighting and placed unusual demands on pilots and ground crews alike. Unlike many engagements of the wider Crusade, the air war was decided overwhelmingly through sustained fighter and bomber operations rather than infantry or armoured assault, reflecting Phantine’s role as a staging world whose value lay chiefly in its manufactories and orbital approaches. Losses among Phantine’s native flight crews were heavy, and the campaign drew reinforcement from Imperial squadrons operating elsewhere in the Enothis system as the fighting intensified. The Double Eagle air war ran concurrently with ground operations associated with the broader Sabbat Worlds campaign and with the activities of the Tanith First-and-Only elsewhere in the theatre, though the two campaigns proceeded largely independently of one another. Its resolution secured Phantine’s airspace for continued Imperial use and allowed the Enothis system’s industrial output to be sustained in support of the wider Crusade.
