Fulgrim’s return to Isstvan III

Fulgrim’s return to Isstvan III was the confrontation between the daemon primarch Fulgrim and Rylanor, Ancient of Rites of the Emperor’s Children, on the quarantined world of Isstvan III. Rylanor, a Dreadnought, a warrior entombed within an armoured war machine, had been sent to Isstvan III with the Legion’s loyalist elements, betrayed with them in the virus-bombing of approximately 005.M31, and presumed dead by the Traitors. He survived alone on the barren world and, driven insane by isolation, built a beacon to lure Fulgrim back to the planet. One account describes that beacon as psychic; another as sonic. When Fulgrim came, he tore Rylanor’s body from its Dreadnought shell. At that moment Rylanor detonated an unexploded virus bomb, which engulfed the planet and scoured away whatever life had returned to it. Rylanor died; Fulgrim survived, his pride wounded. Dating differs: one account places the episode hundreds of years after the Battle of Isstvan III; another hundreds of years after the Siege of Terra; a third millennia after the original atrocity.
