Liberation of Carandiru

Carandiru, a penal world first brought into Imperial compliance by Rogal Dorn during the Great Crusade, fell to the Sons of Horus during the Heresy and was handed to Fabius Bile, who turned its prison population, many of them loyal Imperial citizens, into subjects of grotesque experimentation. Corax led the Raven Guard’s liberation of the world in person. He held back his forces until Commander Soukhounou had kindled an uprising among the world’s civilians and inmates, and only as disorder spread through Bile’s facilities did he commit his Legion. Mor Deythan squads dropped first, seizing the planet’s power generators, silencing its anti-air batteries and severing enemy communications so that the garrison could neither summon aid nor see its attackers coming. Raptor formations carried the main assault deep into the complex until they encountered Bile’s Enhanced Warriors, creations whose strength threw the attack into disarray. Corax himself was driven to the edge of defeat by these creatures, and was saved only by the intervention of Commander Gherith Arendi. With the garrison broken, the Raven Guard drove the Traitors from Carandiru, freeing its surviving prisoners from Bile’s hand. The action is recounted in the novella Ravenlord.
