Only in Death Jago denotes the siege of the fortress Hinzerhaus, fought by the Tanith First-and-Only during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The action took place on Jago, a bleak and sparsely inhabited world whose principal feature was Hinzerhaus, an ancient and labyrinthine stronghold of uncertain origin. Ordered to hold the fortress under the command of Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, the Tanith regiment was besieged by a substantial force of the Blood Pact, the fanatical soldiery serving the Archenemy in that theatre of the Crusade. Hinzerhaus itself proved as formidable an adversary as the besieging force. Its passages and chambers followed no coherent plan, its dimensions and acoustics behaved unpredictably, and its occupants reported persistent unease attributed to the structure’s uncanny properties. Combat within the fortress accordingly took the form of close, disorientating fighting through cellars, stairwells and hidden ways, compounded by cold, dwindling supplies and the constant threat of infiltration from below and without. The siege exacted a heavy toll upon the Tanith First-and-Only, whose ranks were thinned by sustained attrition before the fortress was held and the Blood Pact assault broken. The episode is remembered within the regiment’s history as one of its costliest actions, testing both the discipline of its soldiers and the endurance demanded of them in defence of a position whose strategic value was matched by the strangeness of the ground on which it was fought.
