Tyranid Invasion of Varasine
The Tyranid Invasion of Varasine was an assault by a Tyranid swarm on Varasine, an Imperial world of some seven billion people, whose beleaguered Astra Militarum defenders were reinforced by the Iron Hands under their war leader Kardan Stronos. Stronos had long studied the Tyranid threat, and he brought his battle-brothers to fight on the planet while continually reassessing the battle calculus that governed his decisions, setting the expenditure of materiel and the possible loss of Iron Hands lives against the benefit of evacuating even a small proportion of the population. Each action he took altered the calculation, and with it whether the world would live or die. The date of the invasion and its outcome are not recorded.
