Warrior Lodges
Warrior Lodges were clandestine fraternal societies that arose within several Legions during the Horus Heresy, inspired by tribal lodges on Davin. Their practice took root among Space Marines stationed on the feral world during long campaigns against its native population, where lodge customs were adopted from Davinite warrior cults. By the opening decades of the thirty-first millennium the institution had spread beyond Davin, carried by legionaries into other theatres of war and eventually into several of the Emperor’s Legions. Membership crossed the formal boundaries of rank, drawing captains and serfs alike into meetings conducted in secrecy and bound by oath. Within the lodges, grievances against Imperial command and the Council of Terra could be aired free of the Legion’s ordinary hierarchy, fostering a sense of common cause that official structures did not permit. Chaplains and hardened traditionalists within the Legiones Astartes viewed the lodges with suspicion, regarding their secrecy and levelling of rank as a threat to discipline, yet the practice persisted and, in some Legions, flourished under the tacit tolerance of senior officers. Historians of the Heresy have identified the lodges as one of several channels through which the Ruinous Powers gained purchase among the Legiones Astartes, their secrecy and informal loyalties proving fertile ground for corruption before and during Horus’s rebellion. The Sons of Horus lodge on Davin figures prominently in accounts of the primarch’s turn to the Warmaster’s cause, though the extent of the lodges’ direct influence on other Legions remains a matter of debate. Where loyalist commanders became aware of lodge activity, many moved swiftly to suppress it, regarding the institution as incompatible with the Legion’s proper order of command.
