Warrior Lodges

The Warrior Lodges were clandestine fraternal societies adopted by several Space Marine Legions before the Horus Heresy, modelled on tribal cults of Davin. Membership crossed the formal boundaries of rank, drawing captains, serjeants, and serfs alike into meetings conducted under oath and secrecy, where grievances against the Emperor’s distant rule and the Council of Terra could be aired free of a Legion’s ordinary chain of command. The practice is recorded as having taken hold first among legionaries garrisoned on Davin during protracted campaigns against its native population, who absorbed lodge customs from the warrior cults of that feral world; by the early decades of the thirty-first millennium it had travelled with them into other theatres and other Legions, most notably the Sons of Horus. Chaplains and other hardened traditionalists within the Legiones Astartes regarded the lodges with deep suspicion, seeing their secrecy and levelling of rank as a threat to a Legion’s proper order of command; where lodge activity was detected, many loyalist officers moved swiftly to suppress it. Elsewhere the institution persisted, and in some Legions is recorded as having flourished under the tacit tolerance, or active participation, of senior officers who valued the common cause it fostered among legionaries otherwise divided by rank and duty. Historians of the Heresy have identified the lodges as one of several channels through which the Ruinous Powers gained purchase among the Legiones Astartes, their secrecy and informal loyalties proving fertile ground for corruption in the years before Horus’s rebellion. The Sons of Horus lodge on Davin figures prominently in accounts of the primarch’s fall. In the wars that followed, association with a lodge became, for many Loyalist commanders, grounds enough for suspicion of treachery, and the institution was proscribed within Legions and Chapters that remained faithful to Terra as the Imperium’s military hierarchy was later reforged.
