Callidus Temple
Also known as Callidus Temple
The Callidus Temple is the Officio Assassinorum’s covert temple, whose assassins assume another identity before they kill. Rather than open battle, the temple practises infiltration, deception and impersonation, training its operatives — overwhelmingly female, since the temple’s methods are recorded as working more reliably on the female body — to assume another person’s identity entirely before delivering a killing blow from within a target’s own circle.
Where the Temples of Vindicare, Eversor and Culexus rely respectively on marksmanship, overwhelming frontal violence and the hunting of psykers, the Callidus Temple’s operatives depend on the shape-changing drug polymorphine, carried in a subdermal injector, to alter their bodily form and voice. Surgical implants developed by the Imperium’s medicae adepts extend this further, allowing a Callidus Assassin to assume the form of humanoid xenos such as Orks or Aeldari, and in at least one recorded case, a Genestealer hybrid. The temple’s headquarters lies on Terra, though its precise location is kept classified even within the wider Officio Assassinorum.
Accounts place the Callidus Temple’s founding, then known as the Callidus Clade, in the late thirtieth millennium during the Great Crusade, established on Terra at the direction of Malcador the Sigillite as one of six founding clades whose Directors Primus swore an oath at Mount Vengeance; the exact date is not firmly established. During the Horus Heresy the Clade contributed operatives to a combined Execution Force assembled by the Officio Assassinorum in an unsuccessful attempt to kill the Warmaster Horus. Later in the same war, the Callidus Assassin M’Shen killed the traitor primarch Konrad Curze, who is recorded as having permitted the killing to vindicate his rebellion.
In the millennia since, the Callidus Temple has continued to serve the High Lords of Terra, most often at the request of the Inquisition’s Ordo Hereticus, infiltrating cults and corrupt administrations to remove their leadership before the Imperium’s regular forces move in. Its Directors Primus remain unidentified even to their counterparts among the Officio Assassinorum’s other temples, and the temple’s methods are deliberately kept from wider knowledge, since their value depends on a target never suspecting that a trusted confidant may be an assassin wearing another’s shape.
