Culexus Temple

The Culexus Temple is a temple of the Officio Assassinorum, the Imperium’s institution of sanctioned assassins, dedicated to killing psykers.

Unlike the Imperium’s other assassin temples, the Culexus Temple recruits and cultivates a genetic rarity known as the pariah gene, borne by so-called blanks: individuals who register in the warp as a total absence rather than a presence. Where a psyker projects power into the immaterium, a blank projects nothing, and other minds, psychic or otherwise, perceive that absence as a source of dread. The temple both searches out naturally occurring blanks, who are typically shunned or feared on their home worlds, and is recorded as having cultivated others by artificial means, training the survivors into operatives whose sole function is to hunt and kill psykers, up to and including daemonic entities that exist wholly within the warp. Administratively the temple answers to the Officio Assassinorum, whose Imperial authority is seated on Terra, though the temple’s own fortress is kept a closely guarded secret and is said to lie beyond the reach of the Astronomican, the Emperor’s psychic beacon.

The temple’s origin is traced to the Great Crusade and the era before the Horus Heresy, when the mass transport of blanks to Terra by the Sisters of Silence first revealed how severely their presence could disrupt psychic navigation. Rather than see the mutation exterminated outright, Malcador the Sigillite is recorded as having sheltered the work in secret, and the temple took its present form under a founding Director Primus known only as Sire Culexus, who swore the same founding oath as the other Directors Primus of the Officio Assassinorum. Culexus operatives fought through the Horus Heresy and after, deployed singly against high-value psychic targets across the galaxy. Among the Aeldari, whose seers are almost universally psychic, the temple is regarded with particular dread; the farseer Alladrios Kulcassian of Craftworld Alaitoc is recorded as having spent centuries hunting the temple’s hidden fortress, only to abandon a planned strike after his own foresight revealed that destroying it would in turn doom his craftworld.

The temple’s named operatives are recorded only sparingly and mostly by code name or title, among them Syncella, later a Grand Master, and other Culexus assassins credited with the deaths of individual sorcerers, daemon princes, and rogue psykers. The full extent of the temple’s methods, its current Director Primus, and the true location of its fortress remain undisclosed in surviving Imperial accounts.
