Freebooterz

Also known as Freebooters, Ork Freebooterz

The Freebooterz are Ork pirates and mercenaries who have cut ties with their clan of origin to live by plunder and hire. They are not a single clan in the manner of the Goffs or Bad Moons but a recurring social type within Ork society: warriors, mekboyz, painboyz, runtherdz and entire warbands who have broken from their tribes, whether by choice, by exile, or through the destruction of their original clan. What unites them is not a shared homeworld or bloodline but a common way of life, marked by the abandonment of clan colours and tribal loyalty in favour of self-invented, often flamboyant, insignia.

Freebooterz hold no fixed homeworld, crownworld or capital; they are properly understood as a xenos condition rather than a territorial polity, and no permanent base has been attested for them as a whole. Bands operate from ramshackle void craft, hidden asteroid stations and temporary planetside camps, moving on once a world has been stripped of plunder. Lacking regular access to Painboyz and Mekboyz, individual Freebooterz frequently carry crude, improvised repairs to injury, and eyepatches, hook hands and peg-legs are common among them. Their universal mark is the Jolly Ork, a skull-and-crossbones device applied to banners, clothing and vessels, and bands are typically led by a self-styled Kaptin, a warboss figure distinguished by ostentatious dress, often a wide hat and heavy coat, and a temper considered foul even by Ork standards.

Because they answer to no single Waaagh! (a mass Ork war-movement) or tribal authority, Freebooterz attach themselves opportunistically to larger conflicts, drawn by the promise of a fight and the chance to claim a share of the glory. Freebooter forces are recorded among the raiders who struck the world of Temportus before being repulsed by the Imperial Fists, and among the greenskin elements that intruded on the wider fighting of the Achilus Crusade, the Octarius War and the Fourth Tyrannic War, engaging Imperial, Aeldari and Chaos forces alike as circumstance and opportunity dictated. Such episodes illustrate their general pattern of behaviour rather than a single unified campaign history, since Freebooter kaptins act independently of one another and rarely coordinate beyond their own crews.

Among the more widely recorded Freebooter leaders is Kaptin Badrukk, a former Bad Moon who became one of the best known Kaptins of his kind and commands his own Flash Gitz. Other named figures recorded in Freebooter tradition include Wazdakka Gutsmek, a Bad Ork Biker of renown, and Zodgrod Wortsnagga, a renegade Runtherd who abandoned his former tribe. Because Freebooterz are among the most widely travelled of Orks, they are also valued within Ork society as sources, however unreliable, of information about the wider galaxy, their tales mixing genuine report with boast and exaggeration in roughly equal measure.
