Tallarn Desert Raiders
Also known as Tallarns
The Tallarn Desert Raiders are Astra Militarum regiments raised on the desert world of Tallarn, renowned for mobile armoured and guerrilla warfare. Officers are customarily drawn from the planet’s tribal leadership, and companies favour speed and concealment over static defence, striking suddenly and withdrawing before an enemy can respond in kind. The regiments are deployed chiefly within the Segmentum Tempestus and Segmentum Ultima, where their skill at asymmetrical warfare in arid terrain is valued for reconnaissance, vanguard and spearhead roles.
Tallarn was not always a desert. Settled as a fertile agricultural world, it was devastated early in the Horus Heresy when the Iron Warriors Traitor Legion bombarded its surface with life-eater virus weapons, scouring away its oceans, plains and jungles and leaving only scattered survivors sheltering underground. The resulting Battle of Tallarn, fought as the planet’s people resisted the Iron Warriors’ attempt to claim the ruined world, is recorded as one of the largest sustained tank engagements in Imperial history. In the millennia since, the Tallarn have adapted wholly to their transformed home of dune, scoured rock and subterranean settlement, and their regiments retain the doctrines forged in that resistance: stealth, swiftness and a single decisive blow. Companies typically combine infantry, armour and artillery with Sentinel walker squadrons and Rough Rider cavalry mounted on horses or the reptilian Mukaali, and officers bear the title Duf’adar rather than sergeant. Tallarn soldiers wear light desert garb with a wraparound kefiya, or shemagh, and carry the curved ceremonial khalig knife alongside the Mars-pattern lasrifle, plasma guns and missile launchers favoured for hit-and-run engagements.
Beyond the Battle of Tallarn itself, Tallarn regiments are recorded in numerous later campaigns, among them the Macharian Crusade of 392–399.M41, the Taros Campaign of 998.M41, the Massacre at Big Toof River in 987.M41 — where a Tallarn Baneblade led the third tank detachment — and, in the early forty-second millennium, the Fourth War for Armageddon and the Spinward Front. Individual regiments, such as the Tallarn 3rd under Captain Al’rahem, have won particular renown for discipline in hit-and-run armoured assaults.
Among the Tallarn commanders remembered in regimental accounts are General Akkir, credited with victory at the Battle of the Broadsword, and Colonel Izraell Honor Castillian, taken prisoner by the ork Waaagh! Skyva yet instrumental in its eventual defeat. The Desert Raiders remain, in the present era, among the Astra Militarum’s most consistently deployed specialists in mechanised and guerrilla warfare, their reputation resting less on numbers than on the discipline of tank crews and infantry drawn from a world that offers the Imperium little but soldiers.
