Thunder Warriors

The Thunder Warriors were the Emperor of Mankind’s genetically altered fighters of the Unification Wars on Terra, raised before the Legiones Astartes. Allegiance to the Emperor is not in question, but their institutional status is unlike that of a Chapter or Legion: they were an earlier, cruder experiment in creating superhuman soldiers, organised into twenty regiments during the wars that reunified Terra’s warring nations in the late twenty-ninth and thirtieth millennia. Imperial tradition holds that they were disbanded, or annihilated, once that purpose was served.

Thunder Warriors were engineered to be physically stronger and more savage in close combat than the Space Marines who followed them, but their gene-alterations were unstable, leaving them shorter-lived and prone to bloodlust and mental deterioration. Each regiment answered to a commander distinguished by skill and stability rather than by any physical difference from the ranks, a contrast with the later Legiones Astartes and their gene-sire primarchs. No homeworld is attributed to the Thunder Warriors beyond Terra itself, the world on which they were raised and fought.

Their campaigns belong entirely to the Unification Wars, the conflict by which the Emperor brought Terra’s fractured, techno-barbarian states under a single rule. Imperial record places their final action at the Battle of Mount Ararat, after which the Thunder Warriors are said to have been stood down or destroyed in full, clearing the way for the newly created Legiones Astartes to carry the Emperor’s campaign beyond Terra into the Great Crusade. Accounts of exactly what became of the survivors differ, and later tradition is not consistent on whether their end was a battlefield sacrifice or something more deliberately arranged.

At least one Thunder Warrior, Arik Taranis, is recorded as having survived well beyond the Unification Wars, into the era associated with the Horus Heresy; his later history is treated separately. The Thunder Warriors otherwise passed from the Imperium’s active forces once the Legiones Astartes were raised, remembered chiefly as the instrument by which the Emperor first unified Terra before turning to the wider galaxy.
