Wolf Brothers

Wolf Brothers were a Second Founding successor Chapter descended from the Space Wolves, disbanded after their gene-seed proved unstable. For a brief period they stood as the only successor Chapter drawn from the gene-seed of Leman Russ, a status that endured until further attempts at Space Wolves successors were made many millennia later. Their allegiance was to the Imperium of Man, and their first and only Chapter Master is recorded as Beor Arjac Grimmaesson.

According to tradition the Chapter was granted a dedicated homeworld distinct from Fenris, and was equipped at its founding with roughly half of the Space Wolves’ fleet, armouries, and Priests then available, reflecting the scale of ambition behind its creation. No permanent homeworld for the Chapter is firmly established on the wider record, and the Orrery register accordingly lists none. The intent behind this generous endowment was to establish the Wolf Brothers as the first of a lineage of Fenrisian successors, envisaged as a cordon of Chapters encircling the Eye of Terror to contain the Traitor Legions.

That design collapsed quickly. The genetic inheritance of the Space Wolves, sometimes called the Wolf Within, proved far less stable when transplanted into a new Chapter, and the Wolf Brothers suffered rapid and severe mutation among their ranks. The resulting instability, consistent with the affliction known elsewhere among the Space Wolves as the Wulfen condition, led the Inquisition to order the Chapter’s dissolution, its gene-seed stocks destroyed and its surviving Astartes given no honourable alternative to death. The episode ended the Space Wolves’ broader plan to found further successors from their own line for a very long period thereafter.

Accounts differ on how completely the disbandment was carried out. Tradition holds that significant numbers of Wolf Brothers escaped destruction and scattered beyond Imperial reach, with some later suspicion, never proven, that Leman Russ himself aided their flight. Scattered survivors and renegades are subsequently recorded in isolated and unconnected incidents: a company said to have been lured into an ambush near the Eye of Terror by the Daemon Primarch Magnus the Red, individual Wolf Brothers noted among Chaos warbands including forces aligned with the Iron Warriors and the Red Corsairs, and later Imperial operations that intersected with the Chapter’s fate. These fragments leave the Wolf Brothers a cautionary episode in the wider history of the Space Wolves, illustrating the genetic constraints that would otherwise limit their legacy across the Imperium.
