9 Kappa-Mu

9 Kappa Mu is a black geodesic sphere, roughly thirty kilometres across, that orbits the sun in the gulf between Terra and Venus.

The object is named for its catalogue position by the Mechanicum, which has studied it without being able to breach or fully explain it. Its hull bears no scarring from any known weapon, and the catacombs within are held to predate the Dark Age of Technology, making 9 Kappa Mu older than most fixed points in Mechanicum records. The sphere is also reported as nearly invisible to sensors: it yields no reliable auspex return, and has been detected and approached chiefly through direct sight and physical contact rather than instrumentation.

This near-undetectability made 9 Kappa Mu useful during the Solar War, the opening struggle for the Sol System at the start of the Horus Heresy. Alpha Legion cells operating in the system used the sphere as a rendezvous point, trusting its blind spot in Imperial sensor coverage to cover movements between Terra and Venus. The arrangement ended when Archamus’s Huscarls traced and raided the Alpha Legion presence there, binding the sphere, however briefly, into the wider chronology of the war for the Throneworld.

Beyond this episode, accounts of 9 Kappa Mu are sparse: its builders, its original purpose, and its fate after the Solar War are not recorded.
