Aexe Cardinal trenches

The Aexe Cardinal trenches formed an extensive network of fortified lines that dominated surface warfare on Aexe Cardinal during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. They arose from a protracted stalemate between Imperial Guard forces, including Aexegarian regiments and the Tanith First-and-Only, and the hostile Shadik host, whose campaign on the world was sustained by Archenemy support. The lines extended across much of the contested front, forming a static boundary that shifted only gradually despite sustained offensives by both sides.

Conditions within the trench system were harsh and attritional, characterised by deep mud, entangling wire, fortified redoubts and near-constant artillery bombardment. Poison gas and subterranean mining operations were employed by combatants seeking to break the deadlock, and casualties among the defending regiments were heavy relative to the ground gained or held. The terrain and tactics of the Aexe Cardinal front were widely remarked upon for their resemblance to early industrial-age siege warfare, a marked contrast to the more mobile engagements fought elsewhere during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.

The trenches are best attested as the principal setting of Dan Abnett’s novel Straight Silver, part of the Gaunt’s Ghosts series, in which the Tanith First-and-Only were committed to reinforce the Aexegarian lines against the Shadik offensive. The engagement is treated within the series as a formative and costly episode in the regiment’s service during the wider crusade.
