Balhaut memorial grounds

The Balhaut memorial grounds are a commemorative precinct on the world of Balhaut, established to honour those who fell in its eponymous battle. They form part of the wider post-war landscape maintained on Balhaut in the aftermath of the fighting that secured the world for the Imperium and opened the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.

The grounds trace their origin to the Battle of Balhaut, the decisive engagement in which Warmaster Slaydo’s Crusade forces broke Archon Nadzybar’s Occupation and drove Chaos-aligned power from the world. Given the scale of the casualties suffered by the Crusade’s regiments during the campaign, the site was set aside as consecrated ground for remembrance, in keeping with Imperial custom of marking major victories with formal memorials to the dead.

In the years following the battle, the memorial grounds retained significance as a place of pilgrimage and ceremony for veterans and successor formations of the Crusade, including officers associated with the Tanith First-and-Only. Balhaut itself continued to serve as an administrative and symbolic centre for the wider Sabbat Worlds campaign, lending the memorial grounds a status beyond that of a purely local monument.
