Calth arcologies

The Calth arcologies were subterranean habitation and industrial complexes beneath Calth’s surface, sheltering survivors of the Word Bearers’ assault. Excavated into the planet’s crust as part of Calth’s civil and military infrastructure, the arcologies comprised extensive networks of tunnels, sealed habitation domes, manufactoria, and supply caches originally intended to support the world’s agricultural and garrison populations. Their scale and redundancy allowed them to function as a largely self-contained refuge once the surface became uninhabitable.

Following the Word Bearers’ treacherous strike against the Ultramarines garrison during the Horus Heresy, orbital bombardment and the event remembered as the Campanile strike rendered much of Calth’s surface uninhabitable, forcing survivors into the arcology network. Cut off from immediate reinforcement and enveloped by the surrounding warp disturbances, Ultramarines forces, Calth’s defence auxilia, and civilian populations withdrew into the tunnels to continue resistance against Word Bearers remnants and the hostile forces that followed them below ground. The resulting conflict, fought largely in darkness and confined spaces, became a protracted underground war lasting far longer than the brief engagement initially anticipated.

The arcologies’ endurance during this underground war became emblematic of the Ultramarines’ resilience in the wake of the Heresy’s opening betrayals, with later Chapter accounts crediting the campaign with hardening survivors who would go on to serve in the reconstitution of Ultramar. Knowledge of individual arcology complexes was retained by Calth’s post-war authorities, though the network’s full extent was never comprehensively catalogued in surviving records. The site remains associated with Calth’s broader identity as a world scarred and shaped by the Horus Heresy.
