Golden Throne

The Golden Throne is the great life-sustaining engine beneath the Imperial Palace on Terra upon which the mortally wounded Emperor of Mankind has rested since. Part reliquary, part machine of uncertain and only partially understood design, it holds what remains of the Emperor’s shattered body and psyche in a state suspended between life and death, its workings tended by generations of the Adeptus Mechanicus who profess never fully to have mastered its principles. Accounts differ as to the Throne’s original purpose before the Heresy, with later tradition holding that it was conceived for ends far removed from the role it has since been forced to serve.

The Throne occupies the deepest chamber of the Imperial Palace, a structure raised over Terra’s oldest fortifications and rebuilt many times since the Emperor’s unification of the homeworld. Its continued operation is recorded as depending upon a constant and costly toll, popularly associated with the ritualised offering of psykers drawn from across the Imperium, a practice the Ecclesiarchy and Adeptus Terra alike treat as a solemn necessity rather than a matter for open discussion. The chamber’s true condition is known to very few; even among the High Lords of Terra, direct access is described as tightly restricted.

As the physical seat of the Emperor’s remaining consciousness, the Golden Throne stands at the centre of the Imperial Cult’s veneration and of the Imperium’s claim to legitimate rule, with the Adeptus Custodes and the Sisters of Silence numbered among its most constant guardians. Its fate was drawn into sharper question following the Indomitus Crusade and the ministrations attributed to Archmagos Belisarius Cawl, whose interventions are said to have addressed the Throne’s failing condition without resolving the deeper uncertainty surrounding the Emperor’s long silence. The Throne endures as the fixed point around which Terra, the Imperial Palace, and the wider governance of the Imperium continue to turn.
