Hive Hellsreach

Hive Helsreach is a hive city of Armageddon Secundus, on the world of Armageddon, besieged by Ork forces during the Third War for Armageddon in 444.M41. Positioned within Armageddon’s dense hive-belt alongside Hive Volcanus, Hive Infernus, and Tempestora, its forges and habitation stacks made it a target of Ghazghkull Thraka’s WAAAGH! as the greenskin horde drove toward the planet’s industrial heartland. The variant spelling Hellsreach appears in some later references to the same hive.

As the Ork advance encircled Armageddon Secundus, Helsreach was cut off, its garrison drawn from Armageddon Steel Legion regiments, Adeptus Mechanicus skitarii, and a company of the Black Templars under Chaplain Grimaldus. The defenders held the hive’s outer walls and manufactoria district for weeks under sustained assault, and when the line finally broke, the fighting withdrew into the Cathedral of the Emperor Ascendant, where Grimaldus and a dwindling band of Sword Brethren made a final stand. The siege turned only with the intervention of Legio Metalica, whose Warlord-class Titan Emperor’s Wrath was driven into the Ork lines at the cost of its own destruction, breaking the encirclement long enough for relief forces to reach the hive.

Helsreach’s ordeal placed it alongside Hades Hive and Hive Volcanus among the defining battlegrounds of the Third War for Armageddon, and its defence is remembered within the Black Templars Chapter as one of Grimaldus’s notable actions. Ghazghkull Thraka survived the war to lead further campaigns against Armageddon in the centuries that followed, while Helsreach itself was rebuilt within the fortified industrial belt the Imperium maintained around the planet’s hive cluster after 444.M41. Accounts differ on the full extent of that reconstruction, but Helsreach is consistently listed among Armageddon’s principal hives in later records of the sector’s Ork Wars.
