Karkason

Karkason is a volcanic mining world producing transuranic elements and power crystals, featured in Ian Watson’s novel Space Marine. Its planetary governor, Fulgor Sagramoso, attempted to separate the world from the Imperium. On this map, Karkason is assigned to Segmentum Pacificus, and no crusade sector is specified for it.

The Sagramoso clan had governed the world for millennia when Fulgor killed the preachers of the Imperial faith and declared himself a god. He stationed seven Battle Titans around his capital, which was built of Vitrodur and withstood orbital bombardment. Twenty years afterwards, Chapter Master Vladimir Pugh brought more than seven hundred Imperial Fists to the world, as the Imperium’s tithe, its levy of resources from each world, depended on the mines remaining intact. The city was altered substantially by the fighting, and the conflict extended to neighbouring Antro and to the Squats who had supported Sagramoso.

Karkason is significant chiefly as the setting of the Imperial Fists’ campaign to recover a mining world from a rebel governor. Its placement in Segmentum Pacificus is retained from the parent assignment, but the confidence in that placement is low. The location should not be confused with the Karkarodon System.
