Khur

Khur was a world of the Ultima Segmentum, the site of Monarchia, the Perfect City raised by the Word Bearers Legion in the Emperor’s honour. During the Great Crusade, Khur was brought into Imperial compliance by the Word Bearers under their primarch, Lorgar Aurelian, and its people submitted to Imperial rule with little resistance, a pattern the Legion prized as proof of its own devotional methods.

The manner of that compliance, and the openly religious character of Word Bearers rule on Khur, drew an early rebuke from the Emperor, who is recorded as having sent Lorgar to observe the secular governance of Roboute Guilliman’s Ultramar as a corrective to his Legion’s conduct. Lorgar returned to Khur undeterred, and over subsequent decades Monarchia rose as the Legion’s definitive statement of faith: a city of temples, processional avenues and statuary that venerated the Emperor as a divine figure rather than the rational sovereign of the wider Imperial Truth. Kor Phaeron, Lorgar’s foster father and the Legion’s foremost ecclesiarch, oversaw much of the city’s spiritual life, while the scholar Cyrene Valantion, a native of Khur known as the Covenant, catalogued Lorgar’s sermons and is recorded as having experienced visions foretelling the city’s ruin.

Monarchia’s prominence proved short-lived. On learning of the cult that had taken root there, the Emperor travelled to Khur in person and ordered the city’s destruction as a final rebuke to Lorgar and the Word Bearers, a task carried out from orbit by the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists under Guilliman and Rogal Dorn. Cyrene Valantion is recorded as having died in the bombardment, and the Chaplain Erebus, present on Khur in the city’s final hours, worked upon Lorgar’s despair in its aftermath.

The razing of Monarchia, and the humiliation it inflicted upon Lorgar before his fellow primarchs, is widely held to have set the Word Bearers upon the path that led to their embrace of the Chaos powers and their central role in the Horus Heresy. Khur itself, its showcase city reduced to ruin, passed from Imperial record as little more than the site of that chastisement.
