Cicatrix Maledictum

The Cicatrix Maledictum, or Great Rift, is a vast tear through realspace and warp that split the galaxy in two after Cadia’s fall. It opened in 111.M42, cleaving the Imperium of Man into the smaller, coreward Imperium Sanctus and the vast, isolated Imperium Nihilus beyond, and plunged much of the galaxy into an age of darkness later called the Noctis Aeterna. Where it runs, the boundary between real space and warp space has grown thin and unstable, so that entire systems can be swallowed by warp storms, cut off from astropathic contact, or left prey to daemonic incursion for years at a stretch.

Its appearance was bound to the destruction of Cadia during Abaddon the Despoiler’s Thirteenth Black Crusade in 999.M41, when the fortress world’s ruin and the death of its Pylon defences released a colossal discharge of warp energy at the edge of the Eye of Terror. Accounts differ on how directly Fabius Bile’s ritual works, the long erosion of the Cadian Gate, and the wider decay of the Astronomican’s reach contributed to the rupture, but the result was a rift that continued to widen for over a century of Imperial reckoning before stabilising into its current form. Segmentum Obscurus and much of Segmentum Pacificus and Tempestus fell within or beyond its reach, leaving billions of worlds without guidance from Terra.

The Rift’s opening drew the primarch Roboute Guilliman from stasis to lead the Indomitus Crusade across the newly divided Imperium Sanctus, reasserting Terra’s authority where the light of the Astronomican still reached while Imperium Nihilus was left to endure largely alone. It remains a defining feature of the current era, a permanent hazard to navigation and a wellspring of heightened warp activity that emboldens Chaos incursions, xenos advances, and psychic phenomena across both flanks of the galaxy, with no consensus among Imperial savants that it will ever fully close.
