Prandium
Prandium was an agricultural world in Ultramar, stripped of its biomass by Hive Fleet Behemoth in 745.M41 after a failed Ultramarines defence. Before its ruin it was valued twice over: first as a world of ornamental gardens, and later, after those gardens gave way to tilled ground, as one of the agri-worlds sustaining Ultramar’s populations and armies from the fortress-world of Macragge.
During the Horus Heresy, Prandium served as a proving ground for Roboute Guilliman’s developing Codex Astartes. The Ultramarines officer Remus Ventanus conducted a trial there in which forces drilled and organised to fight in the manner of the World Eaters were pitted against Codex-disciplined formations. The exercise validated aspects of the doctrine that would reshape the Adeptus Astartes, but it also laid waste to extensive tracts of the world, a cost accepted in pursuit of a system meant to outlast any one campaign.
Prandium recovered across the ensuing millennia and returned to agricultural production, only to face a far graver test in 745.M41, when tendrils of Hive Fleet Behemoth reached it during the tyranids’ first great incursion into Ultramar. Chapter Master Marneus Calgar led the world’s defence, but the tyranid swarm proved unstoppable, consuming Prandium’s biomass in its entirety, including its atmosphere, and leaving it dead. The loss came amid the wider Behemoth offensive that also threw the hive fleet against Macragge itself, one of several Ultramar worlds sacrificed or scarred in that campaign.
The fall of Prandium has remained a point of reproach within the Ultramarines Chapter. Some two centuries afterwards, it is still recalled as a defeat that Calgar’s forces could not prevent, an uneasy counterpart to the world’s earlier role as the site of one of Guilliman’s formative victories in shaping how the Adeptus Astartes make war.
