Salvation’s Reach void approaches

The void approaches to Salvation’s Reach denote the stretch of space surrounding the fortress-archive, through which any approaching force had to pass. The region was heavily defended by Archenemy forces holding the Reach, incorporating automated minefields and armed void assets intended to deter or destroy unauthorised vessels. Its hazards formed the principal obstacle to any attempt to reach the archive by ship.

During the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, an Imperial Navy task force was required to fight through these approaches before elements of the Tanith First-and-Only could be inserted into Salvation’s Reach itself. The action involved sustained void combat against Archenemy escorts and defensive works screening the fortress, undertaken to secure a corridor through which a covert raiding party might pass undetected. The engagement is recounted as part of the wider operation against the Reach in Dan Abnett’s novel of the same name.

The void approaches are attested principally through this operation, forming the setting for the naval prelude to the raid rather than a location visited in its own right. As such, no independent political or demographic character is recorded for the region, its significance deriving solely from its role as the guarded threshold to Salvation’s Reach. It remains associated with the wider Sabbat Worlds theatre of the Gaunt’s Ghosts narrative.
