Saturnine

Saturnine is a fortress-bastion complex forming part of the Imperial Palace’s defensive perimeter on Terra, one of the strongpoints incorporated into the wider network of walls, gates, and void shield generators erected to protect the seat of the Emperor of Mankind. During the Horus Heresy, the complex assumed particular significance in the defensive architecture assembled against the forces of the Warmaster Horus as they closed upon the Sol System.

The position was drawn into the fighting during the Siege of Terra, the climactic and protracted assault mounted by the Traitor forces against the Imperial Palace. As with other bastions along the Palace’s outer defences, Saturnine’s garrison and void shield installations formed a critical link in the layered defence intended to delay and grind down the besieging armies before they could reach the Sanctum Imperialis.

Accounts of the fighting around Saturnine form part of the broader chronicle of the Siege of Terra, in which the endurance of individual strongpoints determined the pace and cost of the Traitors’ advance. The complex is remembered, within the framework of that conflict, as one of the many fortifications whose defenders contributed to the protracted resistance that ultimately denied Horus a swift victory.
