Tanith Magna

Tanith Magna was the principal city and capital of Tanith, a Sanctioned World destroyed on the eve of its regiment’s founding. It served as the administrative and demographic centre of a lightly industrialised world otherwise dominated by dense nalwood forest, and it was here, in the tradition of the Founding Fields, that the Tanith regiments were mustered and dispatched into Imperial Guard service. The city’s population, drawn from a populace noted for woodcraft and stealth, provided the core of the regiment subsequently known as the Tanith First-and-Only.

Tanith Magna and the rest of the planet were annihilated during a Chaos assault associated with the renegade commander Anakwanar Sturm, coinciding with the departure of the newly raised Tanith First-and-Only from the world’s surface. The bombardment is commonly described as having converted much of the planet’s crust into a glassy black material, leaving no habitable remnant of the city or its surrounding province. The destruction occurred so precisely at the moment of the regiment’s founding muster that it left the departing soldiers as the last survivors of their world.

As the seat of government and culture for a world subsequently rendered uninhabitable, Tanith Magna is remembered chiefly through the recollections and traditions of the Tanith First-and-Only, who carry forward its customs, dialect, and woodcraft skills as a displaced regiment without a home world to return to. No physical remains of the city are known to have survived the bombardment, and its features are attested only through the testimony and institutional memory of its former inhabitants.
