Tyran
Tyran is an ocean world on the Eastern Fringe, remembered as the site whose destruction in 745.M41 gave the Imperium its name for the Tyranids. Before that year it was an unremarkable holding, its only significant installation a small Adeptus Mechanicus explorator base engaged in routine survey work far from the Imperium’s more contested borders.
In 745.M41, Tyran was struck by a hive fleet advancing through the Eastern Fringe, later identified as Hive Fleet Behemoth. The fleet’s organisms stripped the world’s oceans and biomass in a single onslaught, leaving behind a barren husk. Inquisitor Kryptman, arriving in the aftermath, found no survivors and no biosphere, only the evidence of a feeding pattern the Imperium had not catalogued before. Behemoth did not linger: within the same year it drove on toward Ultramar, where its assault on Macragge brought the Ultramarines under Marneus Calgar into open battle against the same xenos species, giving Tyran’s destruction a direct sequel in one of the era’s better-recorded campaigns.
It was Kryptman who proposed naming the newly encountered species after the world where the Imperium first documented its methods, and the designation Tyranid entered Imperial usage from that report onward. Tyran itself is recorded as having remained lifeless since 745.M41, its explorator base and oceans gone, its standing in Imperial records resting entirely on its role as the origin point of a name rather than on any recovery or resettlement. As such, the world functions in Imperial history chiefly as a fixed marker for the opening of the Tyranid threat, anchoring later accounts of Behemoth’s course to a specific place and year.
