Webway Gate

A webway gate is a stabilised portal linking realspace to the webway, the extradimensional network of eldar-wrought pathways spanning the galaxy. The most consequential example in Imperial history lies beneath the Imperial Palace on Terra: a working access point that the Emperor of Mankind, drawing on knowledge gathered during the Unification Wars and the Great Crusade, sought to master so that His nascent Imperium might move between worlds without dependence on Navigators or the perils of the immaterium. Constructed and expanded in great secrecy, the Terran gate was never a mere doorway but the focus of an entire project, guarded by the Legio Custodes and watched over by the Silent Sisterhood, whose members were prized for their ability to move through the webway’s psychically hazardous reaches undetected by its other denizens.

The project’s significance became catastrophically clear during the Horus Heresy. As Horus Lupercal’s forces closed on Terra, the webway works were breached from within by Chaos-tainted entities that had penetrated the tunnels, forcing the Emperor to withdraw from active oversight of the war’s final defence in order to contain the incursion personally. That struggle, waged in parallel with Rogal Dorn’s defence of the Imperial Palace above and Constantin Valdor’s Custodians below, ended with the webway project ruined and the Emperor gravely wounded following His climactic confrontation with Horus — the injury from which He has never recovered, and which necessitated His interment upon the Golden Throne.

The Terran gate has remained sealed and closely warded ever since, treated by the Adeptus Custodes and the wider Imperium as both a site of profound sanctity and a standing vulnerability, its tunnels periodically the subject of Inquisitorial and Custodian vigilance rather than active use. Webway gates elsewhere in the galaxy fare differently: the eldar craftworlds and the Ynnari maintain functioning access points of their own, and contested or ruined gates recur as flashpoints wherever Imperial, eldar, or Chaos interests intersect with the webway’s hidden roads, making the gate beneath Terra one node in a much larger, largely unmapped network rather than an isolated relic.
