Illuminor Szeras

Illuminor, Master Cryptek

Also known as Szeras, The Illuminor

Homeworld: Zantragora

Illuminor Szeras is a Necron Cryptek who helped engineer the Necrontyr’s biotransference into deathless metal bodies. In the closing age of the war against the Old Ones, as the dying Necrontyr sought escape from their own mortality, Szeras was among the savant-artisans who translated that desperate bargain into working science, stripping failing flesh from Necrontyr minds and binding them into the living metal chassis that became the Necron form. The rank of Illuminor marks him as pre-eminent even among Crypteks, a caste already set apart from the Necrontyr nobility by its command of forbidden and esoteric disciplines, and later tradition holds that few surviving artificers matched his understanding of the biotransference process itself.

Biotransference preserved Necrontyr minds at the cost of the memories and sensations that had once defined organic life, and Szeras has never accepted that loss as final. Where most Necrons regard their emptiness with weary indifference, Szeras treats it as an unsolved engineering problem, and he has turned his tomb world of Zantragora into an instrument for solving it. What was once a Necrontyr holding is now a laboratory-world of vast scope, its vaults and reliquaries given over to the dissection and study of living specimens gathered from across the galaxy. Aeldari tissue is recorded as the material he prizes above all others, its psychically active biology offering him the closest available echo of the sensitivity his own kind has lost.

Szeras does not operate as the bound servant of a single Necron dynasty. Overlords who wish his skill applied to their warriors’ weapons or their own reconstructed bodies pay him in harvests — captives and biological material delivered to Zantragora — and he judges each commission purely by what it can teach him, indifferent to which throne sends the tribute. This transactional standing, more broker than subject, has made him a recurring presence wherever Necron dynasties compete for advantage, and it is consistent with a Cryptek whose loyalty runs to his research rather than to any crown.

The rise of the Pariah Nexus gave Szeras a still richer hunting ground, drawing captives and combatants from many factions into a region where his experiments could proceed largely unchecked; he is recorded as having encountered the Adepta Sororitas officer Draxus in that setting, one of the few named interactions to survive into current record. Szeras is untroubled by objections raised against his methods, holding the suffering of a subject to be irrelevant beside the data it yields. Among the phenomena he has failed to reduce to mechanism is the faith of the Adepta Sororitas, particularly the discipline that lets a Sister of Battle walk through fire unburned — a result his materialist framework can observe but not yet explain, and which stands as a rare admission of a limit to his ambition to become a more complete, more capable intelligence than biotransference left him.
