Lord Cypher

Lord Cypher is a hooded, enigmatic warrior associated with the Dark Angels and the Fallen, whose true identity and allegiance remain unresolved. He is recorded as a solitary figure in a heavy cowl and robes, armed with a sword and a pistol, who appears at moments of crisis across the Imperium. The Dark Angels Chapter treats him as connected to the secret of the Fallen, the former Legionaries who were swept up in the Chapter’s split on Caliban.

Accounts of his conduct differ. He has been reported hunting Fallen, and at other times opposing Dark Angels commanders and Interrogator-Chaplains who pursue them, so that his purpose is unclear even to those who track him. Some traditions hold that he is himself one of the Fallen, and others that he acts on the authority of an older loyalty to the Primarch Lion El’Jonson. The Chapter’s hunting of the Fallen is itself bound to the destruction of Caliban, and Cypher is therefore repeatedly linked to that lost world, though no single account is treated as settled.

Cypher’s significance lies in what he represents for the Dark Angels: a living reminder that the Chapter’s foundational secret is not fully contained. His appearances fall in the 41st millennium, in the same period as the Chapter’s Supreme Grand Master Azrael and its wider Unforgiven campaigns, and he is often placed in the story near the fate of Luther and the broken fragments of Caliban. His present status is unknown, and his allegiance remains an open question in the setting.
