Dark Angels
Also known as I Legion, The Unforgiven
The Dark Angels are the First Legion of the Emperor’s original Space Marine forces, refounded as a loyalist Chapter after the Horus Heresy. Their primarch, Lion El’Jonson, led the Legion through the Great Crusade before its home Legion was fractured by the treachery of a faction under Luther, the Lion’s foster-brother, on the Legion’s homeworld of Caliban. That betrayal, remembered as Luther’s betrayal and the Fall of Caliban, destroyed Caliban itself; a vast fragment of the shattered world survives as the Rock, the mobile fortress-monastery that has served as the Chapter’s seat and principal stronghold ever since. The Dark Angels are consequently without a fixed planetary homeworld, operating instead from this void-borne bastion alongside a fleet of warships and outposts.
After the Heresy the Legion was reorganised into successor Chapters during the Second Founding, in the pattern followed by the other loyalist Legions, though the Dark Angels alone retained their original name and much of the First Legion’s assets and traditions. The Chapter and its successors, collectively known as the Unforgiven, remain bound by a shared and closely guarded task: the hunt for the Fallen, the Dark Angels who followed Luther into treachery at Caliban and were scattered across the galaxy. This pursuit is conducted in secrecy even from other Imperial forces, and knowledge of its full cause is restricted to the Chapter’s senior ranks. The Dark Angels trace their lineage to the wider Great Crusade, in which the First Legion fought as one of the twenty original Space Marine forces raised by the Emperor before the primarchs were rediscovered and given command of their gene-sons.
Under the Supreme Grand Master Azrael, the modern Dark Angels remain a leading loyalist Chapter of the Imperium, distinguished by dark green power armour, a monastic and hierarchical internal structure, and specialist formations such as the Deathwing and Ravenwing dedicated respectively to elite close-quarters warfare and rapid, secretive operations. The Chapter’s long institutional memory and continuing search for the Fallen have carried it through the Imperium’s major conflicts, including the era-spanning defence of Terra during the Siege of Terra, in which loyalist Space Marine forces including the sons of the First Legion stood against the returning Warmaster. The Dark Angels’ dual reputation, as both exemplary warriors and a Chapter shadowed by an unresolved act of treachery, continues to shape their conduct and their guarded relations with the rest of the Imperium.
