12th Black Crusade
The 12th Black Crusade, also called the Gothic War, was Abaddon the Despoiler’s assault on the Imperium’s Gothic Sector from the Eye of Terror in 139.M41. Abaddon massed warbands from across the Eye and struck at a region prized for its dormant Blackstone Fortresses, ancient xenos-built strongholds capable of shattering planets and disrupting the warp. The Gothic Sector’s standing defence, Battlefleet Gothic, was caught unprepared, and its commander is recorded as having fallen in the opening engagements, leaving the Imperial Navy in disarray as Chaos forces pressed toward the sector’s core worlds. The conflict that followed spanned years of void warfare across dozens of systems, with Battlefleet Gothic rallying under new command and drawing reinforcement from neighbouring fleets to contain the Despoiler’s advance. Ork and eldar forces active in the same volume complicated the struggle for both sides, exploiting losses on each front, while Abaddon sought to seize the Blackstone Fortresses intact rather than see them destroyed. Control of the fortresses passed between the combatants more than once before Imperial forces regained the initiative and turned the war’s course. By its end, the Imperial Navy had recovered or scattered the Blackstone Fortresses and driven the remnants of Abaddon’s fleet back into the Eye of Terror, denying the Despoiler lasting hold of the sector even as the crusade left deep scars on the Imperium’s holdings there. The 12th Black Crusade is remembered less for territorial gain than as a proving ground for Abaddon, whose subsequent search for the scattered relics of Horus in its aftermath fed directly into the preparations for the 13th Black Crusade against Cadia.
