Abyssal Crusade
The Abyssal Crusade was a Chaos incursion from the Eye of Terror in the thirty-seventh millennium, threatening Imperial worlds along its approaches. Its warbands are recorded as having drawn together from among the renegade fleets and daemon-touched Legions that shelter within the Eye’s storm-wracked interior, uniting under no single warmaster but a shared design to break the Imperium’s watch along the Cadian Gate and the neighbouring approaches. Accounts differ as to the crusade’s precise trigger, though later tradition holds that a conjunction of warp tides loosened the Eye’s boundaries and allowed the gathered host to spill outward in greater strength than the sporadic raids that preceded it. The crusade’s course is remembered chiefly through the defence mounted by Imperial Navy battlefleets and Astra Militarum garrisons stationed along the Eye’s marches, reinforced by Space Marine Chapters answering the sector’s distress calls. Fighting ranged across the approaches to the Eye rather than through its interior, as Imperial forces sought to contain the incursion at the threshold rather than pursue it into ground few fleets could safely navigate. The crusade is described as protracted rather than decisive, with the tide of battle shifting repeatedly as reinforcements arrived on both sides, until the Chaos host’s cohesion faltered and its constituent warbands withdrew, by increments, back into the Eye. In the crusade’s aftermath, Imperial authorities in the sector undertook what later record refers to as the Judged, a period of tribunal and purge in which worlds and garrisons that had wavered, surrendered ground, or shown taint under the invasion’s pressure were called to account by the Inquisition and the Ecclesiarchy. The Abyssal Crusade is thus remembered less for territory won or lost than for the scrutiny it brought upon the Imperium’s own defenders, and it stands among the recurring eruptions from the Eye of Terror that punctuate the thirty-seventh millennium, contemporary with the wider pattern of raids and counter-crusades along the Cadian Gate that define the era for the sector’s worlds and Chapters alike.
