Age of Apostasy
The Age of Apostasy is the Imperial era, centred on Terra, defined by the tyranny of Ecclesiarch Goge Vandire and the civil strife it provoked. Vandire rose through the Ecclesiarchy during the thirty-sixth millennium and is recorded as having exploited the Imperium’s preoccupation with the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, far from Terra, to secure for himself the additional office of Master of the Administratum. The union of spiritual and temporal authority in a single figure gave Vandire command of both the Ecclesiarchy’s militant orders and the machinery of Imperial government, a concentration of power the High Lords of Terra had never intended and could not easily unwind. What followed became known as the Reign of Blood: a campaign of purges, forced tithes, and persecution carried out through the Frateris Templar and the Brides of the Ecclesiarchy against dissenting nobles, rival adepts, and ordinary citizens across Terra and beyond. Opposition coalesced around the confessor Sebastian Thor, whose Reformation drew together disaffected Administratum officials, elements of the Ecclesiarchy’s own militant orders, and portions of the Adeptus Terra. The confrontation culminated at the Ecclesiarchal Palace on Terra, where Thor’s followers stormed Vandire’s stronghold; accounts hold that Vandire, confronted at the last, aged and crumbled to dust before he could be brought to formal justice. In the Reformation’s aftermath the High Lords enacted the Decree Passive, stripping the Ecclesiarchy of its standing armies and folding its militant orders into a single sanctioned body, the Adepta Sororitas, thereafter answerable to Terra rather than to any single Ecclesiarch. Sebastian Thor was venerated for ending the Reign of Blood and, in later tradition, raised to sainthood. The Age of Apostasy is remembered on Terra and across the wider Imperium as the standing account of what unchecked religious and administrative power can produce, and as the origin of the constraints still placed on the Ecclesiarchy in the millennia that followed.
