Battle for the Rock
The Battle for the Rock was fought in the early 42nd millennium, during the Arks of Omen, when Vashtorr assaulted the Rock. It followed Azrael’s crossing of the Rubicon Primaris, and it is not the earlier siege led by Marbas. The battle was fought on the Rock, not on Caliban. Azrael, still recovering from the Rubicon, appointed Belial overall commander of the defence, while Ezekiel, Lazarus, Asmodai, and Azrael himself led detachments. Azrael brought reinforcements to the Gallerium Exactor, before the Nameless Gate, and during the fighting there slew the Black Legion sorcerer Xorphas. Vashtorr then fought Azrael before the Nameless Gate. Azrael could not win that fight. When Be’lakor arrived and distracted Vashtorr, Azrael wounded the daemon and withdrew to his own lines. Task Force XII of Indomitus Crusade Fleet Primus, under Varro Tigurius, together with Knights of House Raven, then reached the Rock, and Vashtorr withdrew without the engine he had sought. Azrael greeted Tigurius coldly and ordered the Imperial reinforcements to withdraw from the Rock.
