Azrael

Azrael is Supreme Grand Master of the Dark Angels and Keeper of the Truth, custodian of the Chapter’s oldest and most closely guarded secret. The Dark Angels style themselves the Unforgiven, and under Azrael’s command they fight two wars at once: the Imperium’s, waged openly, and their own, waged in secret against the Fallen — the corrupted knights of the Order who sided with Luther against the primarch Lion El’Jonson on Caliban. Azrael directs the hunt for the Fallen while presenting it to outsiders as little more than an old Chapter superstition, a deception he maintains even as he governs it. Azrael was recruited from Kimmeria, in Ultima Segmentum.

As Supreme Grand Master, Azrael commands from the Rock, the vast fortress-monastery built from the wreckage of Caliban that serves the Chapter as stronghold, shipyard and prison for the Fallen it recaptures. He leads the Inner Circle, the innermost and most burdened of the Dark Angels’ senior ranks, whose members alone share knowledge of Caliban’s true fall. Azrael carries the Sword of Secrets and wears the Lion Helm, a relic once borne by the Lion himself, and holds authority over the wider Unforgiven, the many successor Chapters bound to the same oath and the same shame.

Azrael crossed the Rubicon Primaris to join the Primaris ranks of the Adeptus Astartes. During the 13th Black Crusade he led Dark Angels forces alongside Logan Grimnar, Great Wolf of the Space Wolves, against Typhus on Macharia and Korolis, worlds of the Cadian System, and on Kasr Sonnen, the fortress world that is the third planet of the Cadian System. On Wyrmwood his command was nearly overrun before reinforcement arrived from Dante, Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, and from the Lion, newly returned to a galaxy he had abandoned for ten thousand years.

The Lion’s awakening has not simplified Azrael’s burden. Where the primarch’s return might have been expected to force the Fallen’s betrayal into the open, Azrael’s task remains what it has always been: to prevent the Chapter’s ancient shame from breaking into open schism within the Imperium, now conducted in the presence of a gene-father who already knows the truth Azrael has spent his life concealing from everyone else.
