Battle of Charys
The Battle of Charys was fought on the warp-touched world to which the renegade sorcerer Madox had withdrawn following his defeat on Garm, carrying with him the Spear of Russ, the Space Wolves relic lost into the warp during that earlier engagement. Charys’s instability, its geography shifting in ways no reliable Imperial survey could chart, made the world a fitting refuge for a sorcerer seeking isolation, and it was there that Madox prepared a further working, this time intended not to summon Magnus the Red but to destroy the Space Wolves Chapter itself through means bound up with the recovered relic. The strike against Charys was led by Ragnar, by this point returned from his Wolfblade posting on Terra and still marked within the Chapter by the controversy of Garm’s loss. The expedition was aided, in circumstances particular to Charys’s strangeness, by elements of the long-lost 13th Great Company of the Space Wolves, encountered amid the world’s disordered terrain. Separated from Fenris for generations and altered by their prolonged exposure to Charys and worlds like it, the 13th Company’s warriors nonetheless answered the summons of their Chapter’s need, fighting alongside Ragnar’s strike force against Madox’s followers. The battle carried Ragnar and his allies into the heart of Madox’s domain on Charys, where the sorcerer had by then advanced his ritual to the point of threatening the Space Wolves with destruction rather than merely courting the daemonic. Ragnar engaged Madox directly in combat amid the ritual site, the confrontation a direct continuation of their encounter on Garm years before. In the fighting that followed, Ragnar killed Madox, the sorcerer’s death interrupting the ritual before it could be brought to completion and ending the threat the working posed to the Chapter. Amid the wreckage of Madox’s sanctum, the Spear of Russ was recovered, the relic having remained in the sorcerer’s possession since its loss into the warp at Garm. Ragnar carried the recovered Spear back to Fenris and returned it to Logan Grimnar, closing the matter that had shadowed his standing within the Chapter since his first engagement with Madox. The Battle of Charys was received within the Space Wolves as Ragnar’s redemption, the controversy of Garm’s loss set aside now that the relic responsible for it had been restored to the Chapter’s keeping, and his standing among his brothers recovered accordingly.
